We're zebra finches and we're lucky because we get to spend summer days in a big aviary in our owner's garden. Because we spend warm days outside in the open air, our owner has registered us with DEFRA. We're happy they've done this as they'll get updates and advice from APHA if there are bird diseases in our area. That will not only help to keep us safe, but also help to prevent the spread of disease to other kept and wild birds.

Bird and Poultry Owners

This new (1st October 2024) guidance from DEFRA applies to birds you keep outdoors or in enclosures that are open to the outside air. If you keep 50 or more birds you should already be in compliance with the legal requirements relating to their keeping and ownership.

You do not need to register your budgies, parrots, cockatiels and finches (psittaciformes or passeriformes) if the are both:

  • fully housed in your home or other in-door structure

  • with no access to the open air

If your bird(s) always live in-doors and has no access to the open air, you can take it to the vet without registering it.

DEFRA is requesting that all pet and owned birds are registered so that the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) can update and provide guidance to keepers and owners if there is an outbreak of disease (such as bird flu) in the area. This will help to prevent the spread of disease and will help protect all kept birds.
